One of the most common questions we get asked is whether a business should go with a content management system like WordPress or Shopify, or whether a hand-coded static website would be a better fit. The honest answer is: it depends entirely on what you need.
What Is a CMS?
A content management system is a platform that lets you edit your website content through a dashboard — no coding required. WordPress, Shopify and Squarespace are all examples. You log in, make changes, hit publish. It's designed to put control in your hands.
What Is a Static Site?
A static website is built with hand-written code — HTML, CSS and JavaScript. There's no database, no login panel, no admin area. Every page is a file that gets served directly to the browser. It's simple, fast and secure by nature.
When a CMS Makes Sense
A CMS is usually the right choice when:
- You need to update content regularly — blog posts, news, product listings
- Multiple people need to manage the site
- You're running an online shop with changing stock
- You want to add functionality through plugins or apps
- You need to scale quickly with new pages or sections
When Static Is the Better Option
A static site can be the smarter choice when:
- Your content doesn't change often — a brochure-style business site
- Speed and performance are a top priority
- Security is a concern — no database means no SQL injection, no plugin vulnerabilities
- You want lower ongoing costs — no hosting fees for a CMS, no plugin updates
- You want a site that just works, with minimal maintenance
The Trade-Offs
A CMS gives you flexibility and independence, but it comes with overhead — updates, security patches, hosting requirements and the occasional plugin conflict. A static site gives you speed and simplicity, but making changes typically requires a developer.
There's no one-size-fits-all answer. The best approach depends on your business, your budget and how hands-on you want to be with your website. We build both, and we'll always recommend whichever option genuinely makes the most sense for you.
